About Me

My name is Dr. LaToya Bernice Gathers; I am a psychotherapist. I have lived in Greensboro for almost ten years. My entire life has revolved around service and helping to improve the lives of others. This life's work essentially has taken on a global interest working for nonprofits such as Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) (DWB) to run a hospital and outpatient clinic and starting a TB program at a refugee camp between government- and rebel-held territory in Sudan.

I am involved in AAUW National and serve on the Guilford County Planning Commission Board as well as being a member of the Junior League of Greensboro. As mentioned earlier, I believe in service and have done so through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for over twenty years.

Change Happens When All Voices Are Heard

No voice should be left unheard. No one should be left behind. No one should be subject to any form of exclusionary rhetoric.

Democracy is dependent on the participation and representation of all citizens in democratic institutions and processes. These institutions and processes include election management bodies and elections, constitutional bodies and constitution-building processes, political parties and parliaments.

Underpinning all this is political inclusion. This is the idea that every citizen, regardless of class, age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, group, culture and ethnic or religious background, should have an equal right and opportunity to engage with and contribute to the functioning of these institutions and processes.

Why Run for Greensboro City Council District 2 Seat?

I believe in the political impact when folks are civically engaged. Civic engagement looks different for everyone for some, it is voting, and for others, it involves protesting. Some choose to vote in federal races, and others vote every time there’s an election. Sometimes engagement looks like writing letters to senators, and other times it means wearing a small lapel pin with the American flag.

I believe cities are the strongest when we have civically engaged residents, transparency, and real opportunities for involvement with leaders that listen.

Economic Development

I propose three areas of focus where civic and business leaders can leverage underutilized community resources and drive economic growth:

1. Invest in institutions of higher education as engines of innovation and job creation

2. Foster diverse communities, utilizing untapped talent to drive higher economic returns as well as greater equity

3. Build basic infrastructure to ensure future growth and to retain a highly-trained local workforce
