Q&A with Provisional Dr. LaToya B. Gathers! Welcome to #JLGreensboro

Why the JLG?

Because I spent my entire life thus far traveling to improve medical and healthcare in the world and I want to improve lives locally.

What do you like to do?

I provide research that aims to change the brain, by directly targeting the brain and focusing on the life experiences encountered by the person. I also specialize in helping clients develop better cognitive and emotional skills, reduce symptoms of mental illness, and cope with various life challenges to improve their lives.

Any drink with any person... tell us who and what?

Inez Beverly Prosser: The First African American Woman to Earn a Ph.D. in Psychology would be my guest and we would drink tea with honey and milk. Inez Beverly Prosser earned her doctorate from the University of Cincinnati in 1933. Her dissertation, The Non-Academic Development of Negro Children in Mixed and Segregated Schools, was an important work in that it explored differences between African American students at integrated schools and segregated schools. Her research looked at questions related to their occupational interests, participation in school activities, racial attitudes, and other important topics. She was one of the first psychologists to argue that racism had a damaging effect on the psychology of African American children. This research was used in the debates surrounding Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954
